Perhaps you own a tablet computer or one of those smart phones with the bigger screen. In that case you know that there are millions of apps out there now. By having more mobile devices in the hands of our citizenry we are changing how our society operates. People are no longer stuck at home because they have to be by a connection on the Internet, now they can go out and use their tablet computers. Of course, it costs a lot of money to have unlimited 4G wireless plans for these devices.
Yes, many of these devices now have Wi-Fi capability, but that means you have to find Wi-Fi. If you go to a place like Starbucks coffee shops you can use their Wi-Fi for free, but everyone else is doing the same, and the bandwidth slows everyone down. Especially when someone downloads a big file, or is watching a movie, or busy doing video stuff. That sucks down all the bandwidth being shared by everyone there. What's the solution? Well, I would suggest that cities become more tablet friendly. Think about this? Is your town becoming a tablet friendly city?
There are lots of benefits to this. If your city blasts Wi-Fi citywide with extremely strong bandwidth you will indeed be promoting tourism, shopping, and dining. You see, people can go from their homes, and rather than paying 4G wireless prices they can use the Wi-Fi option, and all the apps out there to tell them where their favorite restaurants are, or how to navigate to their favorite shopping areas. Even to find out which places are running coupons or specials that day. You also end up promoting such things as public libraries, museums, events, city services, and even the use of buses as you can find out the schedules, routes, and how the system works.
What I recommend is that cities blast Wi-Fi in their parks, shopping centers, sports fields, and on all government properties whether it be City Hall, the library, aquatic center, etc. Wi-Fi should be available at beaches, public golf courses, national parks, airports, and along major streets and roads. If people have Wi-Fi they will be out and about in your town, thus, making it human-centric and fun. This promotes more retail sales, and the whole system ends up paying for itself. It even elevates real estate values.
As the cost of equipment comes down, these types of projects have a faster ROI. There is no reason today that every city doesn't become a tablet friendly town promoting all the latest and mobile technologies, those technologies are built for human interaction, not just in the virtual world, but here the real world as well. Not only should you support such things, you should make sure your city becomes fully Wi-Fi capable. Please consider all this and think on it.
